Year 1 & 2

Fostering curiosity and love for learning

In years 1 and 2, pupils embark on an exciting educational journey filled with engaging lessons, interactive activities, and a nurturing environment that fosters their curiosity and growth.

Children are excited and ready to learn after a fantastic start to their educational journey in the Early Years.

Providing a well-rounded education

Our provision for children in Years 1 and 2 builds on the EYFS curriculum and follows key elements of the National Curriculum. It is an enhanced and creative programme and includes additional specialist activities and lessons.

Teaching and learning opportunities promote active engagement, depth of learning and motivation. In addition, small class sizes are hugely effective in providing a high level of focused teacher involvement with each child.

Our dedicated teachers offer rich and exciting experience with regular trips, visitors and plenty of opportunities for hands-on investigation and problem-solving. Pupils continue to build upon and benefit from the specialist teaching lessons introduced during the Early Years.

Opportunities outside of the classroom

We place a great emphasis on courtesy, good manners and the ability to work and play as part of a team. We encourage children to have respect for their friends and their surroundings and to develop their independence inside and outside of school.

Children in Year 2 are also given posts of responsibility becoming House Captains, Librarians, Music Monitors, Eco-Monitors and Lunch Helpers. We hold an Enterprise Week when Year 2 pupils are asked to write a business plan and given a budget to raise funds for a charitable cause, thus encouraging their entrepreneurial spirit and skills.

We feel that Glenesk provides an excellent start to young people’s education in a nurturing and stimulating environment.

Prepared for the future

During Years 1 and 2, we also focus on preparing your child to sit entrance exams and attaining scholarships to the schools of your choice in Year 3. As specialists in pre-preparatory education, we are experts in getting the best out of your child, ensuring they reach their full potential.

We start the process in Year 1, when our Headteacher Mrs Sarah Bradley meets with parents in the Summer term to discuss future options. With a wealth of expertise in this area and key contacts with the Heads of feeder schools, she can provide a unique insight and support.
